by F.A. Barnes
Bootleather scholar Barnes has traced on the ground this neglected expedition and located on its route two important points on the Old Spanish Trail, and has also rediscovered a major scientific site. This book describes the route within the present state of Utah of the first official American Expedition into the Territory of Utah, the historical research required to establish this route, and its unusual aftermath.
Note that this volume is a second edition of the original book published, number 20 in this series. Most of the contents of this second edition are identical to the first, but the chapters in the first edition that were devoted to descriptions of what is now Canyonlands National Park by explorers other than those on the Macomb Expedition were omitted before reprinting, and a chapter was added summarizing the still ongoing aftermath of our rediscovery of the historic discovery site of the first sauropod bones found in the western hemisphere.
The book is an enjoyable read for afficianados of southwest history in general, and canyon country enthusiasts in particular.
